Chapter 29

I managed to track down Franklin quick enough, and after explaining the situation to him, he agreed that it was probably for the best. Considering I found him reading the newspaper story about me to his family, who were all grinning and laughing about it, it wasn’t a hard sell. After that, we met up with Lillianne and Halona for a working dinner, and set about compiling full reports of everything that had happened to all of us.

Our meeting was in another hotel room, this one I suspected was more for informal parties than for sleeping, with its fireplace, multiple long leather couches, small square oak coffee table, and all the fine carpets and hanging chandelier. It was a beautiful room with another beautiful view of the city, but we were here to discuss fairly unpleasant things, so the beauty was a bit dimmed. Still, it was comfortable, and considering the workload ahead of us, that was worth its weight in gold all on its own.

It also helped that it was a room designed to be accommodating to large races, so Halona had some room to pace, which she did. For the rest of us it was just plain roomy, which helped us focus on our work, which was an account of all our various adventures that involved those strange machines in anyway.

Everything from the attack on Sugar Leaf by the Furwraiths for Halona and myself, to the horror and information we’d uncovered at Bakers Acres, to even the mess down in Five Points.

Lillianne brought in her dwarf photographer, and Orna set up the strange coppersmith device for him to take pictures of it. I couldn’t help but glare at the strange machine, but that didn’t stop me from taking my own detailed notes about the thing, and especially about the symbols on it. And apart from the one symbol I’d seen on all of them, this one had several others, all arranged around the bowl part in a concentric pattern.

There were a lot of notes, and a lot of pictures taken.

After that the photographer was led off by Maggie to meet the Raccoon women, who had passed all their checkups apparently, and were completely healthy, for beastkin women.

Never mind the fact that they’d been human women this morning.

Once the pictures were done, Orna packed up the device for us in a sturdy box, after taking quite a few notes about it herself, and then left to begin setting up her own room and equipment. She had a project of her own to work on for the fast approaching Exhibition after all.

For the rest of us, it was lots, and lots of writing, in excruciating detail, everything we’d encountered, learned, seen and done.

We were at it for several hours late into the night, but we managed to finish it.

Thank God for coffee.

Once the meeting was over, I moved the box containing the machine to Halona’s room, along with the rest of the materials to hand over tomorrow. She’d offered
